Zocor

Simvastatin, marketed as Zocor, is a cholesterol-lowering drug that decreases lipids in the blood and belongs to the class of drugs known as statins. Although statin drugs carry a risk of muscle damage, a recent study suggests that some patients may be more at risk if prescribed more than 20 milligrams of Zocor. Zocor is used in conjunction with Zetia, another cholesterol medication and marketed as the popular drug, Vytorin. Vytorin has come under heat lately when 2009 reports suggested the drug was not as effective as claimed.

In March 2010, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a warning linking high doses - 80mg - of Zocor to muscle injury. The risk of injury is increased amount patients of Chinese descent as well as patients taking other blood pressure medications. For a full list of medications, visit the FDA website. Patients should consult with his or her doctor before changing or stopping the prescribed dose, however the risks have been reported in patients taking 20mg or more of Zocor.
